Highlights of the year 2018 – Brexit, trade talks and green finance

The year 2018 was a year of Brexit, electric cars and trade talks. It included special moments in the financial markets and in the company side. Green Bonds and Green Finance were getting more attention in the markets and trade talks and Brexit were the topics during the year 2018 along. Climate Change and low carbon landed also in the agenda of central banks.

Investors were also asking what is the role of the City as a global financial hub. Should it have its own rules in spite of the Brexit? In the financial hub competition, Frankfurt and Paris were the European cities to get more new financial offices as financial companies were moving some operations to the EU side.

The UK Parliament is expected to vote of the Brexit during Janury 2019 after very intensive debate about the deal during the year.

Climate Change has become part of the everyday life in the financial markets and for example one of the biggest insurance companies in the US, Berskhire Hathaway informed in February 2018, that it has got 3 billion dollars losses of the natural catastrophies, the hurricances in the US. Several central banks, including the European Central Bank and some Asian ones, have also agreed about the co-operation in the climate issues and how to monitor the impact on the markets.

In the tech-side augmented reality and ioT were the themes for the year. Apple, Amazon, Google, Tesla, Intel  and Samsung  were one of the tech-companies to deliver new services related to the new technology. On the other side of the topic, Facebook was dealing with the privacy issues globally. New tech- companies listed in the markets were for example Spotify and Xiaomi.

Year 2018 was a year of electric cars in many countries. The e-cars breakthrough with charging issues was one of the tech topics as well. Telsa founder Elon Musk was the leading industry sector figure as he estimated that Tesla would make one million cars by 2020 in February 2018.

Also the German automakers announced new investments and concept cars. For example the BMW Group launched an autonomous driving campus in Munich in March 2018.

Year 2018 was also a year for luxury goods and services. The Basel World 2018 -fair announced its good selling and for example the CEO of Hublot, Ricardo Guadalupe,  told ComteamPUB+ that the company expects double digit growth for the year and that the Chinese customers will be the leading segment.

In the debt markets the US Uber and Netflix issued their junk bonds to investors. Uber, the ride-sharing company, is said to plan an IPO for the year 2019 according to the secret filings to the SEC.

One of the biggest infrastructure projects ever, the China Silk Road, is getting more attention from the green investors side, while the organization made its first announcement of the green principles for the project co-operation and operators. The ancient Silk Road is expected to rise the GDP growth by 4 % or 240 billion dollars in the countries invlolved according to Credit Suisse analysis.

The aim of the Roman time Silk Road is to connect the western Europe with the eastern coast of China and to renew the infrasturcture in between. This means also that the 10 world largest container ports are located along the route.

Trade talks between different countries have continued lively during the year. US and China have been in the headlines, but also the EU with its agreement with Japan.  The political situation and rising volatility in the financial markets tell the direction for the next year. Geopolitical easing is needed.

BMW´s new electric Concept iX3 -range 400 km

P90301493_highRes_bmw-concept-ix3-04-2BMW´s new electric concept iX3.

BMW Group  (BMW:GR) is working hard with electric cars. The company has  published a new electric concept car,  iX3  at the Auto China 2018 show in Beijing.

This is the first model from the BMW brand to be driven purely by electric power as fully-fledged Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).

– The expansion of locally emission-free mobility vehicles is one of the key areas of centralized action, alongside with automated driving, high-end connectivity and new digital services, which are driving the company’s transformation of the mobility industry as part of the NUMBER ONE> NEXT strategy.

According to BMW, the launch of the fifth-generation electric drive system technology  makes integration into different vehicle architectures significantly easier. The individual components of this new BMW eDrive technology stand out with their lower weight, scalability and compact construction.

– The electric motor, transmission and power electronics are now grouped into a single component, making it much easier to integrate them into different vehicle architectures. Plus, their modular construction enables them to be adapted to the performance levels required and the available space. Another notable element is that the electric motor does not need any rare earths, which means the BMW Group is not dependent on their availability, the company says.

The version of the fifth-generation electric motor developed for the SAV generates maximum output of over 200 kW/270 hp. The likewise model-specific high-voltage battery has a net capacity of over 70 kWh, which is enough to give the electric SAV a range of more than 400 kilometres (249 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

Another major feature of the high-voltage battery  is its optimised charging capability. The energy storage system has a newly developed Charging Control Unit and is designed to be hooked up to fast-charging stations generating up to 150 kW. The highvoltage battery can be charged in just 30 minutes from one of these stations.

BMW i is also associated with  DriveNow (car sharing), ReachNow (car sharing 2.0), ChargeNow (easy access to the world’s largest network of charging points), ParkNow (straightforward location, reservation and payment of parking spaces).

BMW´s new autonomous driving campus in Munich

P90300102-highRes

The BMW Group  (BMW:GR) has opened its new autonomous driving campus in Germany,  Munich this week. This new centre reflects the company´s target to innovate and develop new standards for the future and to increase the sustainability leadership.

– 15 months ago, the BMW Group took the decision to pool together its development expertise in the fields of vehicle connectivity and highly / fully automated driving at a single location. The campus, which offers 23,000 square metres of office space with room for 1,800 employees, was completed in record time. The site’s optimum infrastructure, its proximity to the Research and Innovation Centre, and the nearby link to the motorway network helped to swing the decision in its favour, the company says in the press release.

The autonomous driving campus is using modern office interior design and technology in order to integrate the working as smooth as possible, from development to testing.

– This means, for example, that a software developer working at the new campus can immediately test out freshly written code in a vehicle that is just a short walk away, the company says.

Mini Countryman hybrid – one size for all

The Mini Countryman is amazing with size and design. This icnonic small size car is still very known for its design and the brand has been able to keep the loyal customers through the years.  The exterior and interior have the same feeling as years ago and the retro feeling is somehow very appealing.

This new hybrid Mini, Mini Countryman Cooper SE All4 Business, has a driving range for about 40 kilometers and the electric power consumption is 13,2-14 kWh/100 km combined. Fuel consumption combined is about 2,1-2,3 litres per 100 kilometers. Carbon emissions are between 49-52 g per one kilometer.

The lithium batteries are under the rear seats, and somehow you can still find good space for luggages in this plug-in-car. It is calculated that the space is between 405 – 1274 litres if you turn the seats down.

This could be a very good basic car for small families with not that much long-distance driving. You can easily have your weekend items with you and drive economically. And the electric driving range might be enough for the daily working distances.

The BMW Group, which owns the Mini brand, has also announced that it is in talks to start a battery-electric-car Mini vehicles production in China with its co-operation partner Greal Wall Motor.

–  In addition to production of the first battery electric MINI at the main plant in Oxford starting in 2019, this signals a further clear commitment to the electrified future of the MINI brand, the company says in the press release.

Last year 2017, China was MINI’s fourth-largest market, with around 35,000 units delivered.

Powerful driving with BMW X5 hybrid

BMW is one of leading car manufacturers with design and quality.  This hybrid BMW X5 was also an example of the modern feeling and functions. The SUV, or should we say SAV (sports activity vechile)  is having powerful engines with engine power (HP) 245 and combined electricity consumption 15,3 kWH per 100 km. Electrical range is roughly 31 kilometers or 22 kilometers with everyday use.

The EU emission classification is EU6, but it will be seen later this year what is the real driving emissions (RDE), when the EU is setting the new real emissions standards. It is also expected that the UK will follow the new EU standards in spite of Brexit. In this SUV, the combined carbon is 77 g per kilometer according to the company information. The carbon for driving in the city or in highways are not given yet.

Your first impression of the safety in this car is the seat belt. It matches your body after you start the driving, but also giving the needed flexibility in every situation.  Also the other assistant services like iOs or Android integrated services like locking/unlocking, engine oil levels, tyre pressures can be also done via the application remotedly.

The BMW Group has integrated the connected car  & mobility functions in its core services as well and lately it bought the company called DriveNow, which enables car sharing in different cities globally. But at the same time the company is building with other car manufacturers a European network of charging stations.

Electricity target for the BMW company is that the group have reduced the Co2 emissions by at least 50 % compared to the base year 1995. This target is for the year 2020.

For this plug-in-hybrid X5 car, the charging is easy and the company has made a service package for home and office locations.   Later on, as cars, hybrids and electric cars are having the same kind of functions in the vechiles, one of the most important competitive edges will be the total service offering and quality in the processes. The building of the infrastructure is happening at the moment.

The luckage storage was big enough for example for sports equipments altough the litium-batteries were below the trunck floor. And the size of traditional gasoline fuel tank was 83 liters/21,9 US gallons.

The interior design and comfort with driving are excellent. Leather, led lights finish the feeling.

The Group has made a video of the BMW  X5 adventures in Asia.  Notice that car is not hybrid. Watch the video here:

New BMW Hybrid 330e – high-quality design

A new BMW Hybrid 330e iPerformance Business Exclusive is offering something new and old. The car is very sporty and speedy one, but also hybrid. This car makes you feel comfortable while all the interior design is modern, but the functionality is also good.

This new  BMW Hybrid is having automatic transmission and for example the turning circle is about 11 meters, which makes it easy to handle in the city.  The interior design with leather seats and with blue lights make it also very special. The new lightning helps you for example to find your lost mobile phone in the car during the dark winter hours.

But something new to consider also. The fuel tank is about 40 liters, which is not so much one can expect. With the electric power, the driving range would be about 20 kilometers. So these are good to keep in mind when driving on the road and thinking about the next station – and not all the stations are having electric power as an option. The combined CO2 is about 44 g/km according to the company.

The trunk floor space is about 370 liters due to the battery position, but the car´s top speed is about 225 km per hour. So, very nice to work with in the city and outside.  This car is a good example of the new development with new technology, but still keeping the style and design as expected.
